In Memoriam: Ray Henn

Dr. Raymond W. Henn, owner of RW Henn LLC and an adjunct professor of mining engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, passed away on March 28, 2022 in Centennial, CO.

Ray is best known for his significant contributions to the grouting and underground construction field and has been leading our efforts in offering of the annual grouting and ground improvement short courses at Colorado School of Mines. Ray loved Colorado School of Mines and was an extremely gracious and kind colleague and mentor to many of us at Mines.

Ray was born in Brooklyn, New York, and attended St. Brigid Elementary School and Alexander Hamilton High School. He served with the Green Berets in Viet Nam and Okinawa from 1967 to 1969. After the military he attended New York City Community College, followed by graduating with a Degree in Geology from Queens College of the City University of New York.

In 1973, he married Patricia Ann Donegan in New York. While working in Oswego, New York, for Stone and Webster Engineering he completed a Master’s Degree from SUNY in association with Syracuse University. After completing the Raystown Hydro Project outside State College, Pennsylvania, the family was transferred to Centennial. While living in Colorado he also worked on the Dallas Light Rail Tunnel Project. He began work on a doctorate in Mining and Earth Systems Engineering at Colorado School of Mines. Upon graduation he was an Adjunct professor at Mines while working for Haley and Aldrich and then Lyman Henn. He later worked for Brierley Associates before forming his own business, RW Henn, LLC.

Ray was President of the American Underground Association 2002-2004, a Distinguished Member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, the Moles and the Beavers. Ray published over two dozen professional papers in various technical publications, and he has authored three ASCE text books on grouting for underground construction.  He established the first, UCA Student Chapter which is at the Colorado School of Mines and served as the faculty advisor for eight years. In his free time Ray enjoyed collecting antique mining equipment and memorabilia from Colorado and the West.

Ray leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Patricia, son Daniel, and granddaughter Morgan Henn. He was predeceased by a son, Patrick.
