About this course…

Cooperative effort is increasingly important in the petroleum industry as teams of geologists, geophysicists, engineers, and operations personnel work together to solve complex problems. The Petroleum Engineering SuperSchool is an intensive, immersive, program designed to provide the technical fundamentals needed for effective teamwork across the breadth of activities in the upstream petroleum industry. The program is a hybrid of nine days of in-person instuction and two days of field trips, coupled together with online modules to be finished individually over a nine-week time frame.

Who should attend?

The SuperSchool is especially designed for new engineers with a non-petroleum engineering background, new geologists and geophysicists, operations personnel, and non-technical management personnel. Past attendees have come from companies such as: Anadarko, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Pioneer Natural Resources, Saudi Aramco, PVDSA, PEMEX, Schlumberger, Whiting, El Paso E&P Company, US Army and US Department of Energy.

2024 Course schedule

Eleven days of the course will be in-person on the campus of Colorado School of Mines from June 17 – 28, 2024. Nine of the days will be instruction, and two of the days will be field trips. At the conclusion of the in-person portion there will be 7 modules remaining. Those modules must be completed online by November 1, 2024. Each of the online modules will take approximately three (3) hours to complete.

Teaching philosophy

Classes are taught with small groups, authentic problems, and timely feedback to provide a vibrant learning environment. This approach makes the SuperSchool more of a workshop than a lecture course. Problem solving with real world field cases are used, together with hands-on experiences in the state-of-the-art computer lab, oral presentations, and two days of field trips. A certificate of completion will be awarded at the end of the school.

SuperSchool modules

Course work in the school is arranged such that the face-to-face days will expose attendees to the basics of upstream operations and set a baseline of knowledge. During this time, attendees will experience certain laboratory operations, take two field trips (one geologic in nature and one to review field operations) and develop a cohort that will help in the following online modules. Within the online modules, topics such as geological concepts, exploration techniques, environmental issues, drilling, stimulation, economics and data analytics are covered in depth.
